2 male dancers required for new queer duet.


Gary Rowntree | Dance is an emerging dance company based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and requires two UK / Ireland based male dancers for a queer research and development project this summer.

The project will take place from the 9th July – 21st July 2019 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Applicants must have at least four years professional performance experience and a strong technical background. Dancers must be experienced in contact work and hold the ability to learn and retain movement material quickly. Previous experience in highly physical work, theatre and use of text is also required.

*There is no audition for this role. Audition is by email only.*

Dancers Required

Gary Rowntree required four professional dancers for a new 1920's style production that takes place this December at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. 

The production requires 2 female & 2 male dancers. All dancers applying must:

  • Have experience of working in a range of styles of dance,
  • Be highly skilled and versatile,
  • Have some partner work experience and
  • Be available for a week of rehearsals at the end of November, and at least four performance dates in December. Dates TBC.

The rate of pay is £920. This is inclusive of rehearsals and Performances. If additional performances are required, then and additional fee with be paid.

Gary Rowntree | Dance at Echo Echo Festival of Movement and Dance 2016.

Performances Friday 18th and Saturday 19th November 2016.

Echo Echo Studios 8pm.

Gary Rowntree's new work'Courtship' (working title) has been selected to showcase at the Echo Echo Festival of Movement and Dance as part of the Open Call Short Works. Gary's work was shortlisted from over 180 proposals and will be performed along side seven other short works; local, national and international.

Gary enters into ACNI SIAP project: Choreographing for two.

Monday 18th July to Saturday 23rd July 2016.

Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast.

Gary enters into his next research and development period this week which has been funded bythe Arts Council of Northern Ireland SIAP award. He will work with two fantastic dancers: Carl Harrison and Catherine Muckle and explore relationship content in his development of choreographing for two.

There will be a sharing on the Saturday 23rd of July at 4pm in the upstairs studio of the Crescent Arts Centre and is open for all to attend and provide feedback.

Morning classes are also open to professional dancers and advanced students from Tuesday 19th to Friday 22nd July. 9:30am to 10:30am. Cost: Pay what you can. More information about class here.

November 2015

Arts Council of Northern Ireland - SIAP Award.

Today I received a letter from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland detailing that I have successfully secured a SIAP General Arts Award towards the cost of my next Research and Development period. 

This will commence in 2016 when I will begin to develop my work on choreographing for two.

Gary Rowntree & Bridget Madden team up to work on 'The Belfast Tempest'

The Belfast Tempest by Terra Nova Productions.

We are very pleased to announce that Gary Rowntree and Bridget Madden will team up to deliver the choreography and movement for Terra Nova's Production of The Belfast Tempest.

The Belfast Tempest features a 200 strong cast, and is one of the largest Shakespeare productions that Belfast will ever see. It will be performed on Queen's Island from April 20th to 23rd 2016 as part of the global celebrations in honour of the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeares death.

New term of classes at the Crescent Arts Centre - New classes added

Monday 14th September 2015 to Thursday 10th December 2015

New term for classes | Workshops at the Crescent Arts Centre.

The next term of classes and workshops at the Crescent Arts Centre delivered by Gary Rowntree will begin on Monday 14th of September 2015 and will run until the 10th of December  2015. The following classes | workshops that will be delivered are: Beginner Jazz | Intermediate Jazz and Beginner Contemporary | Intermediate Contemporary and Musical Theatre Dance. Gary will also deliver a Contact Improvisation workshop and Halloween holiday youth dance programme later this year.

Gary Rowntree | Dance: SIAP Research and Development 2015.

Most recently Gary completed his Arts Council of Northern Ireland SIAP award. The main aim of the project was to allow Gary to explore choreography through research and development. The project aims were to explore how technology could assist in the studio in developing and or producing movement for choreography. The research looked at a range of technology including lights, AV, portable sound and hand held technology. Here is a short video of what happened.

New Class: 'Free-Movement' Summer sessions

Monday 20th July 2015 onwards.

Free-Movement Class only at The Loft Physical Performance Centre.

Free-Movement is an effective class that integrates contemporary dance techniques, strength and breath that works to help develop your alignment, co ordination, rhythm, articulation of the body and flexibility. The class is taught through a series of exercises that explore movement, isolation, weight exchange and floor work. Challenging enough to help you build long, lean muscles as well as improve your stamina, balance and core. Enjoy sequential movement sequences that truly work up a sweat. Take risks in exploring your own body. All levels welcome.

SUMMER DANCE CAMP

Monday 20th July 2015 to Friday 24th July 2015 (10am to 3pm daily)

Summer dance week programme for young people aged 10 to 16.

Join us for a 1 week youth dance summer week, where students will have the chance to experience a range of difference dance styles and techniques such as contemporary, jazz, ballet, Irish and hiphop (urban) to showcase in a small performance at the end of the week. (studio performance)

Delivered by experience professional tutors Gary Rowntree and Bridget Madden, this is an excellent opportunity that is not to be missed. Family and friend are welcomed at the end of the week to attend the sharing of the students performances.

Students must bring their own packed lunch each day.

Princess Gritzabella

Princess Gritzabella as one of four works in progress as part of the EVOLVE project.

Research and Development Week

23rd of March to 27th March @ The Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast

Gary Rowntree enters into one full week of Research and Development thanks to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

The Arts Council of Northern Ireland have granted Gary Rowntree with the SIAP award to enter into research and development in exploring how the use of technology during studio time can assist in creating fresh movement material. Gary will be working with four fantastic dancers: Bridget Madden, Esther Alleyne, Lorcan O'Neil and Abbie Madden.

Due to injury, Katy Skelton is unable to perform on Saturday evening for CityDance Contemporary Dance Showcase. CityDance Belfast. Gary Rowntree | Dance presents FIXED.

Gary Rowntree | Dance presents a new duet work in progress: FIXED.

Dancers Katy Skelton and Gary Rowntree join in exploring a new duet and current findings will be performed as part of the Crescent Arts Centre's CityDance Festival 2015. The work explores the idea of the human body as a machine which is designed to create and react. The body, like many other machinery can malfunction. Malfunctions can be fixed.

CityDance Belfast is also offering a range of free classes and workshops on the Friday and Saturday.

Arts Council Of Northern Ireland - SIAP - R&D.

Fantastic news! The ACNI have granted Gary Rowntree the SIAP grant to go into research and development in exploring how the use of technology during studio time can assist in producing movement material. The project aims are to explore how a range of technologies can affect the potential movement vocabulary outcome in a intensive creative week using four dancers. 

Gary Rowntree will work alongside a technician who will assist with the range of equipment used.

A one off workshop devoted to dance and creative connection - delivered by Gary Rowntree & Bridget Madden.

Contact Improvisation is an open-ended exploration of the kinaesthetic possibilities of bodies moving together through contact. Join Gary & Bridget for two hours of improvisation dancing, through partnerwork and creating movement that is sometimes wild and athletic and sometimes quiet and meditative.

This workshop is open to all. No previous experience is required.
